Data Access

By default, the access permissions on our system are set such that members of the research group to which an account belongs are also able to read the data of the user.

$ ls -l
total 15372
-rwxr-x---  1 alice agtest      551 Feb 19  2015 junk.pl
drwxr-x--- 22 alice agtest     4096 May  8  2015 test
-rw-r-----  1 alice agtest 11994870 May 30 13:47 test.tgz
-rw-r-----  1 alice agtest     1260 May 30 13:47 tmp.txt

Permission to read, write, and execute may be denied to members of the group by using the following command:

$ chmod g-rwx test.pl

The permissions associated with the file will be changed accordingly:

$ ls -l test.pl
-rwx------ 1 alice agtest 551 Feb 19  2015 test.pl

The user is responsible for changing the permissions from the default settings.
