Operating Policies

Applying for an account

Users who would like to apply for access to one of our systems must be members or guests of the university and require a valid FU Account (link in German).

Logging in

Access to the systems is via a text terminal in which ssh can be run.

Submitting jobs

Users are not allowed to start jobs directly after logging in. Instead the batch system must be used. Any programs which have been have been started interactively on a login node will only be given limited main memory and CPU resources and may be terminated at any time without warning.

Data access

By default, the access permissions on our system are set such that members of the research group to which an account belongs are also able to read the data of the user.

Account termination

When your FU account expires or you leave the group you specified in your account application, then your access to the HPC systems will be deactivated. All data on the HPC systems will be deleted after 4 weeks.

Backup

A nightly backup of the data in /home is made. Data stored in the /scratch file systems is not backed up and cannot be recovered if deleted by accident or lost due to a file system failure.

Occasionally work needs to be done on the HPC systems which leads to services being restricted
