File Systems

For users there are essentially two file systems which are available:

/home (16 TByte):

This is where the users' home directories are stored with the path /home/<username>.

Writing a large amount of data very quickly to this file system can cause the system to become very slow and could even cause the whole file system to crash. Please contact us before attempting this.

However, all important results, scripts and other documents for which you need a back should be stored here. The file system /home is backed up to tape every night. This is an incremental backup, but a full backup is carried out every 6 weeks.

/scratch (174 TByte)

This is where users should write temporary files, in particular large ones. This file system has the highest I/O-throughput. There is no backup for files on /scratch.

More information on backup can be found here.
